THE HONG KONG EDUCATION SYSTEM VS. THE U.S. EDUCATION SYSTEM
Hong Kong and the United States are two separate countries and may have things that are similar and different from each other. The differences are teaching style and government involvement. The similarities are role of the teacher and the involvement of religious groups in education. Hong Kong and the United States also have a section that overlaps in two places that are different and similar at the same time and that is qualification for teachers and free school years.
The teaching style of Hong Kong is that in 10 years’ time where children need to achieve 7 goals of learning. These goals are responsibility, national identity, habit of reading, language skills, learning skills, breadth of knowledge, and healthy lifestyle (" Education Bureau: The,”). The United States has a more basic learning style, which is to have children be able to read and write. The United States also teaches students Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Technology, and the Arts. The difference between these two countries is in the concept that Hong Kong teaches their children responsibility and the United States does not have the teacher teach responsibility as it is for the parent to teach it to them. Hong Kong and the United States are different within the government when it comes to education. Hong Kong government takes an active role in recommending a curriculum for government run schools and other schools that take government money. In the United States, the government has a small part within running the school system. It simply makes sure that government money is available to all the states to run their school systems. Each state has different curriculums they run within their schools. They follow any law that is directed to education but states do not have a set curriculum that the government provides.
Hong Kong and the United States have similarities as well. The role of the teacher for one, the teacher in both countries needs to work with community workers and be resourceful for materials. Teachers also need to share issues, knowledge and experiences with co-workers which both countries believe in. The teacher’s role also in both is to be ready to try out new things and work strategies. The religious groups are the same in both countries; they provide private schooling for their communities based on their beliefs and values. They also both collect government money to run their programs within their countries ("School Administration Guide,” 2012.pp 35).
